Dusk at Mt. Maxwell
Acrylic on canvas, 20" x 30", 2018
In July of 2017 I visited Mt. Maxwell, on Salt Spring Island, for the first time with my wife Kate. This painting is based on her photograph.
We had spent that hot afternoon at the small beach visible in the lower left of the picture, the mountain looming overhead, until the sun no longer reached into the alcove. On the way back to our lodgings we decided, on impulse, to drive up the mountain.
We almost changed our minds, as we were losing daylight fast and the road was rougher and steeper than we were expecting; Instead we arrived in time to see the dusk fall over the Gulf and San Juan Islands, the scent of fallen, sun-baked cedar fronds and pine needles evaporating into the night air.
